Democrats out-raise opponents in Colo. congressional races

Democratic candidates in all seven of Colorado’s congressional districts have reaped more money in the most recent quarter than their Republican opponents. That’s according to the latest campaign finance filings from the Federal Election Commission.

In the state’s hottest congressional race – incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Coffman of Aurora versus Democrat Jason Crow for the 6th District seat – contributions received by Crow in the third quarter ending Sept. 30 totaled $1.85 million, the new filings show. Coffman’s haul in the same period was just over $725,000.

Crow has now raised $4.5 million to Coffman’s $3.23 million. Crow’s largest donations have come through Democratic organizations that aggregate donations to candidates, such as Act Blue and Swing Left.

About a third of Coffman’s contributions come from political action committees, ranging from oil and gas, medical and the National Rifle Association to committees run by fellow Republican members of Congress.

He also took in a $2,700 contribution from former oilman Tatnall Hillman of Aspen, half of what Hillman gave Coffman in 2016.

Meanwhile, in the sprawling 3rd Congressional District, the fundraising contest between incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton of Cortez and Democratic former state Rep. Diane Mitsch Bush of Steamboat Springs has tightened up as a report suggests that the race itself is getting closer as well.

Mitsch Bush announced Tuesday that she raised $729,000 in the most recent reporting period that ended on Sept. 30. Tipton raised $396,601.

The recent haul places Mitsch Bush just $9,000 below Tipton in overall fundraising for the congressional seat that covers the Western Slope and extends east to Pueblo. Mitsch Bush now has raised a total of $1.38 million to Tipton’s $1.39 million, according to the FEC.

Like Crow, Mitsch Bush’s biggest contributions – a total of $370,000 – have come through Act Blue and Swing Left.

Mitsch Bush has received tens of thousands of individual donations averaging $16, said campaign manager Sonja Macys. The average donation is less than $16. She attributed part of that success to the national Democratic effort to win back the House majority.

Another portion comes from those who sat out the 2016 presidential election, much to their chagrin, Macys said.

“We’re seeing those folks as very regretful and they’re stepping up and doing as much as they possibly can to make their voices heard,” she said.

Tipton’s biggest contributors to date include political action committees, including those funded by banks and investment firms, insurance companies, and energy companies such as Exxon and Xcel Energy. Individual donors include Hillman and Golden beer magnate Peter Coors.

Hillman and his wife have collectively given more than $1.4 million to Republican congressional candidates throughout the nation in the 2018 election cycle. Hillman did not contribute to Tipton’s campaign in 2016.
