There’s a reason federal courthouses are imposing structures. They’re architecturally designed to be intimidating spaces to impress upon all who enter the power of the judiciary.
The irony is that the judicial branch is a very delicate institution with neither the power of the sword nor the purse. It’s only asset – it’s only currency – is legitimacy. That legitimacy is derived, in part, from the way federal judges ascend to the bench.
