Stapleton wins endorsements from Republican district attorneys, sheriffs

All but two of Colorado’s Republican district attorneys are endorsing GOP gubernatorial candidate Walker Stapleton, his campaign said.

In addition, 18 elected Republican sheriffs and Nick Rogers, president of the Denver police union, are part of a coalition of law enforcement and public safety officials unveiled by the Stapleton campaign.

The two-term state treasurer is one of four Republicans running in this month’s primary to replace term-limited Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper.

“It is an honor to have the backing of such an influential group of public servants from the law enforcement community.” Stapleton said in a statement. “Whether it is putting an end to sanctuary cities or reforming policies at the Department of Corrections, there is a lot of work to be done to improve public safety in Colorado. With these brave men and women at my side, I know we will be able to get the job done and make Colorado a safer community that we are all proud to be a part of.”

Stapleton announced endorsements from 11 of the 13 Republicans serving as district attorneys across the state. The only DAs not on the list are George Brauchler, chief prosecutor for the 18th Judicial District and a candidate for attorney general, and Will Furse, the 22nd Judicial District for Dolores and Montezuma counties in the southwest corner of the state.

Colorado is divided into 22 judicial districts, each covering between one and seven counties.

“Walker has taken the time to develop a deep appreciation for the need to address long standing law public safety issues in Colorado and I look forward to working with him to protect and serve our citizens when he becomes our next governor,” said Prowers County Sheriff Sam Zordel in a statement.

District Attorney Dan Rubinstein, the chief law enforcement officer for Mesa County in the 21st Judicial District, credited Stapleton for attention to rural parts of the state.

“The issues we face in the rural and mountain regions of Colorado are not the same as those on the Front Range, and I am thrilled to be supporting Walker Stapleton for governor because he understands the diversity of public safety concerns facing our state,” Rubinstein said in a statement.

Stapleton is running in the June 26 primary against businessman and former state Rep. Victor Mitchell, retired investment banker Doug Robinson and former Parker Mayor Greg Lopez.
