The U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a Colorado baker’s refusal to make a wedding cake for a gay couple was unpopular with a crowd that gathered Monday evening on the steps of the state Capitol.

Among the attendees was Gov. John Hickenlooper, who called Monday’s ruling “disheartening,” but insisted that the narrow focus of the decision means that businesses still “must be open to all,” The Denver Post reports.

Also on hand Monday night were Charlie Craig and David Mullins, who filed a complaint with the state after Lakewood baker Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop refused to make their celebration cake in 2012, citing religious objections.

The Colorado Civil Rights Commission and the state court of appeals ruled against Phillips, but the U.S. Supreme Court reversed that ruling, mostly because it faulted the process used by the state commission.

Craig said Monday he will continue to fight against discrimination.

He told supporters during the rally at the Colorado Capitol that he and his partner brought the case “because no one should have to face the shame, embarrassment and humiliation of being told ‘we don’t serve your kind here,'” the Associated Press reports.
