Emily Sirota sets campaign event featuring call from Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders plans to take questions from volunteers supporting House District 9 candidate Emily Sirota at a campaign event next month, the Democrat announced on Twitter.

Sirota is facing Ashley Wheeland in a June 26 primary for the southeast Denver seat represented by state Rep. Paul Rosenthal, D-Denver, who was knocked off the ballot in a bid for a fourth term by the two challengers.

Sanders, who endorsed Sirota in February, will either call or appear via the Skype videoconference application on June 10, Sirota said in a Facebook post. A spokesman for Sirota’s campaign told Colorado Politics that the location hasn’t been set yet but added that it’ll take place in the morning somewhere within the district.

Jeff Weaver, manager of Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, will attend the gathering and talk about grassroots organizing and “the future of the progressive movement,” the Sirota campaign said.

Rosenthal, however, termed Sanders’ scheduled appearance “[b]ewildering” and “irrelevant” in a tweet.

Sanders, who defeated Hillary Clinton by nearly 20 points in Colorado’s 2016 Democratic caucuses, ranked as the most popular politician in the country in a much-ballyhooed survey released last summer.
