Three nominees have been selected for a Colorado Supreme Court vacancy that will occur when Chief Justice Nancy E. Rice retires July 1.

The nominees, announced Wednesday by the Colorado Judicial Department, are Maria Berkenkotter of Boulder, Karen L. Brody of Denver and Carlos A. Samour Jr. of Lone Tree.

The trio was selected during meetings this week in Denver. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has 15 days from May 16 to appoint one of the nominees to the court, according to a Wednesday press release from the department.

Berkenkotter served as chief judge of Colorado’s 20th Judicial District from 2013-2017 and a district court judge for the same district from 2006-2017, according to the website of Judicial Arbiter Group Inc., which she joined in January.

Brody is a judge on Colorado’s Second District Court, according to Ballotpedia. Hickenlooper appointed her to the position in 2014, and she won retention in 2016’s general election.

Samour Jr. is a judge on Colorado’s 18th District Court, a position he was appointed to in 2006, according to Ballotpedia. He has won retention twice since. In 2014, Rice named Samour the district’s chief judge.
