Hey, a win is a win, so you can’t blame George Brauchler for being proud he “unanimously won the nod” – and the top line on the June 26 ballot – even if he was the only guy in the Republican primary for attorney general.

That’s like being prom king when you’re home-schooled.

“Our campaign has traveled all across the state meeting with Coloradans and listening to their concerns.” Brachler said in a victory press release. “I will be an Attorney General for all of Colorado. I will keep our families and communities safe, stand up for the Rule of Law, and defend the Constitution. Everything important to me is here in Colorado and I want to leave a better Colorado for our kids and grandkids.”

To his team’s credit, worthy of respect, the press release noted: “George Brauchler is the only Republican candidate on the primary ballot. Brauchler will face the winner of the Democratic primary.”

The district attorney in Arapahoe and some other counties, Brauchler was the consensus pick for nomination when Cynthia Coffman decided to run for governor instead of a second term as the state’s top prosecutor.

He had been the governor’s race and switched.

Things didn’t turn out well for Coffman on Saturday.

The Republican Attorneys General Association that drove Coffman’s campaign was pleased with Brauchler’s big win, as well.

“George Brauchler is a tough-on-crime prosecutor, and colonel in the Colorado National Guard, he has the right experience to keep Colorado communities safe,” Leslie Rutledge, RAGA’s chair and the Arkansas attorney general, said in a statement.

“A smart, common-sense leader George is supported by sheriffs and law enforcement leaders all across Colorado. George Brauchler will make an excellent attorney general because he will defend the rule of law and protect Coloradans.”

They couldn’t help themselves. After a victory lap for the one-horse race on the GOP side, the ever-feisty RAGA took a shot at the Democrats.

“While the Colorado GOP is united behind George Brauchler, Colorado Democrats are in disarray. The crowded race to decide the Democratic attorney general nominee is led by a Boulder liberal with no prosecutorial experience, Joe Salazar. A recent Magellan Strategies poll put Salazar at 34% of the vote. In a close second, with 5% of the vote, is another Boulder liberal with no prosecutorial experience, Phil Weiser. Despite raising a ton of money from his liberal D.C. friends, Weiser is tied with Amy Padden and up 1 point on Brad Levin.”

Fact check: Salazar is from Thornton, and a fellow Colorado House member charged on Twitter Saturday that Salazar voted to cut funding for background checks, which the National Rifle Association would support.

At the assembly, Weiser got 52.87 percent of the vote, Salazar received 36.58 percent and Padden had 10.54 percent.

Padden also has filed petitions, so she could qualify for the ballot if she has enough valid signatures. Levin also submitted petitions.
