The Denver Hispanic Chamber of Commerce presented House Speaker Crisanta Duran its public official of the year award at a gala last weekend at the Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center.

“Advancing our community has motivated me throughout my legislative career, and it’s a great honor to gain this recognition,” Duran said in a statement.

The House Democratic Press Office cited Duran’s work to pass the Advancing Students for a Stronger Economy Tomorrow (ASSET) bill in 2013, which provides undocumented students in-state college tuition if they graduate from a Colorado high school after at least three years.

Democrats said the program has helped more than 2,200 of :Colorado’s best and brightest students to reach their full potential and maximize their contribution to society.”

The chamber honor is just the latest for Duran. She was honored last month in Chicago by the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, and in January she was lauded by the Center for American Women.

Duran is in her last of four terms in the lower chamber representing House District 5 in Denver. Shee became the state’s first Latina House speaker last year, and in 2016 she told her family’s story at the Democratic National Convention.
