Colorado House Speaker Crisanta Duran, former lawmaker Polly Baca honored for Hispanic leadership
Speaker Crisanta Duran will leave the Colorado House after this session. She might need a moving company just for her awards for her time in office there.
Saturday the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute honored Duran and former Colorado lawmaker Polly Baca at its national conference in Chicago.
Duran, the state’s first Latina House speaker, received the William C. Velasquez Trailblazer Award. Baca, who served in both the Colorado House and Senate between 1979 and 1986, was presented the Dr. Henry L. (Hank) Lacayo Lifetime Achievement Award.
“I believe in the power of people to come together and problem solve for their communities and I am honored to receive this award,” Duran said in a statement. “Together, we must ensure that the doors of opportunity remain open for our Latino leaders who will lead us into the 21st century.”
The nonprofit leadership institute’s four-day national conference included more than 6,500 participants from 40 states.
Duran has been in the limelight steadily since joining the legislature in 2011. She was a speaker at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. That same year she was named the Colorado Democratic Party’s Rising Star, as well as a national rising star by the pro-abortion-rights political organization EMILY’s List.
In 2014 she was listed among the top “40 under 40” for national political leaders by the Washington Post.
And just last month Duran was lauded by the Community College of Denver as a role-model for students.
Baca is a member of the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame.
She was regional administrator of the General Services Administration of the Rocky Mountain Region and a special assistant to President Bill Clinton, and as well as a director of the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs.
