Tom Tancredo wanted Trump as person of the year and thinks you should, too

It’s not surprising that gubernatorial candidate and alt-right icon Tom Tancredo agrees with radio host Peter Boyles. It’s also not surprising that they agreed that President Trump should have been Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

What’s surprising is that Tancredo thinks you should say, “Me, too.” Trump fought the media and won, Tancredo reasons.

“I don’t know how anyone could disagree with that when you consider what he has accomplished, not just by becoming president – monumental, all the things stacked against him including media, (the) fact that he has accomplished such an enormous amount of things that I certainly like and care about in this one year,” he said on Boyles’ radio show on 710 KNUS last Friday.

The state Democratic Party didn’t agree. A spokesman flagged the radio clip to our attention.

The #MeToo movement was the pick of the venerable news magazine. Trump said in November he “took a pass” on the honor, which the magazine said never happened.

Tancredo claimed that the media was aligned against Trump. Tell that to Breitbart, Fox News or his son-in-law’s New York Observer. Tancredo told Boyles 95 percent of all the stories written about Trump were negative. He didn’t cite a source, but Colorado Politics will.

The Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy analyzed election-cycle news coverage and found that 62 percent of the coverage of Clinton had a negative tone compared to 56 of Trump’s coverage. From the conventions to Election Day, 77 percent of Trump’s coverage was negative, compared to 64 percent of the reports about Clinton.

Trump, however, parlayed his fight with the media into a campaign advantage. Tancredo’s 95 percent, we’re guessing, was his perception.

“He’s at 46-percent approval rate, 53 percent against, same as Obama on same date in first year,” Tancredo told Boyles citing a Rasmussen Report poll last week that Trump, himself, has cited. “I don’t know how you can say he’s not man of the year.”

The Rasmussen poll, several media outlets have noted, is an outlier giving Trump his best approval rating, by far.
