Colorado state Rep. Alec Garnett named Realtors’ legislator of the year
The self-proclaimed “voice of real estate” in Colorado is singing the praises of state Rep. Alec Garnett, the Democrat from Denver.
Garnett, among other reasons, helped forge House Bill 1279 the first compromise to avoid construction defects lawsuits in the last legislative session, which the real industry industry argued was a reason behind the decline of affordable housing, namely condominiums; if there was a high risk and low profit margin, builders just don’t bother to build them.
The Colorado Association of Realtors gave Garnett the award this week, and he’s one of the first to receive it, the organization said in a press release.
“We’re proud to recognize a legislator who consistently makes the effort to consult stakeholders and prides himself on finding compromise across the aisle at the legislature. And working together to get a construction litigation reform bill on the Governor’s desk was no easy task,” Ann Hayes, the association’s chairwoman, said in a statement.
“Our legislative policy committee, comprised of members throughout the state of Colorado, has carefully considered this decision and believes that a legislator who helped construction litigation reform become a reality is a legislator that clearly took the steps necessary to enhance the ability of Coloradans to achieve the American dream of homeownership.”
Elected in 2014, Garnett is the assistant House majority leader and serves on the Appropriations, Education, and Business Affairs and Labor committees.
