The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel: Tipton tiptoes again
Our man in Congress, Rep. Scott Tipton, voted Wednesday to advance legislation that would amend the Antiquities Act and give the president unilateral authority to rescind Colorado National Monument with no public input.
Tipton, a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, joined fellow Republicans in a straight party-line vote to advance H.R. 3990 to the House floor. The bill, introduced by Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, would severely limit future national monument designations, including stipulating that proposed monuments larger than 640 acres be subject to a federal review process and enabling presidents to reduce or alter monuments already in existence.
The bill would amend the Antiquities Act to give the president unfettered authority to reduce the size of any national monument established under the Antiquities Act by up to 85,000 acres -meaning Colorado National Monument could be entirely revoked without any public notice or input.
