Doing good trumps doing well
It doesn’t always happen in the corporate world, but occasionally principles do win out over profits. That seems to be what happened last week when St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center announced plans to continue offering labor, delivery and neonatal care services for Pueblo families.
OK, since St. Mary-Corwin is part of a nonprofit organization, maybe “profits” isn’t the right word. But the hospital apparently is willing to face financial challenges in order to keep providing a vital community service.
Since June, there’s been a debate about whether the hospital should stay in the baby business. A low patient volume, rising numbers of uninsured patients and other concerns prompted the discussion about whether birthing services should be part of St. Mary-Corwin’s future medical offerings.
