The Loveland Reporter-Herald editorial: Prosecutors need more choices to deal with sexting

Colorado lawmakers could probably devote an entire session just to update state laws to take into account the technology being carried in just about everyone’s pockets: the smart phone.

Phones that can connect with the internet, take pictures, take video, pay bills, offer a street map (or picture) of just about any neighborhood and do myriad other tasks have rendered many laws obsolete or just plain old-fashioned.

When lawmakers passed a law regarding the sharing of ballot data — even after the invention of photography — they certainly didn’t think that people would be taking pictures of themselves with their ballots to post on social media. Telecommunications laws passed when land-line telephones were being installed in the 1930s didn’t take into account how cellular technology would free people from those lines within three generations.
