Webb, Ruiz among Democrats named to DNC commission on presidential nomination process
Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb and Emmy Ruiz, Colorado state director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, are among the 21 members named to a commission tasked with healing divisions within the national Democratic Party by suggesting reforms for its presidential nominating process, the Democratic National Committee announced Monday.
The Democratic Unity Reform Commission is the result of a deal reached at last summer’s Democratic National Convention between Clinton, Bernie Sanders and national Democrats to recommend ways to make sure the nomination process is accessible, transparent and inclusive, the DNC said. The commission will be considering the role of superdelegates as well as sorting out how the party conducts caucuses and primaries, among other aspects of the process.
“At the 2016 convention, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and national delegates agreed that in order to capture the energy of Democrats from across the country it is critical that we enhance the nominating process that continues to embrace the big tent of our party,” said DNC Chair Tom Perez in a statement.
“This includes everyone, from lifelong Democrats to 18-year-olds who cast their first ballot in 2016. A Democratic Party that gives every Democrat a voice in the process will make enormous gains from the school board to the Senate this cycle and it will take back the White House in 2020. We already see this incredible energy in a number of highly competitive races across the country.”
Strategist Jennifer O’Malley Dillon was named chairwoman of the commission and Sanders ally Larry Cohen was named vice chairman at the DNC last July, with the remaining members to be appointed by Clinton, Sanders and the next DNC chairman — Perez, elected in February — by the end of April.
Webb and Ruiz were both tapped by Clinton to serve on the commission, Democrats familiar with the process said.
The commission is scheduled to meet for the first time May 5-6 in Washington, D.C., and continue meeting through the year. It’s supposed to issue a report and recommendations to the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee by Jan. 1, 2018.
According to the DNC, the commission’s members and states are:
Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, chair, District of Columbia; Larry Cohen, vice chair, District of Columbia; Charlie Baker, Massachusetts; Jan Bauer, Iowa; Jeff Berman, District of Columbia; Lucy Flores, California; U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge, Ohio; Maya Harris, New York; David Huynh, Louisiana; Elaine Kamarck, Massachusetts; Jane Kleeb, Nebraska; Nomiki Konst, New York; Yvette Lewis, Maryland; Gus Newport, California; Jorge Neri, Illinois; James Roosevelt, Jr., Massachusetts; Emmy Ruiz, Texas; Nina Turner, Ohio; Jeff Weaver, Virginia; Wellington Webb, Colorado; and Jim Zogby, District of Columbia.
