The Pueblo Chieftain editorial: County did the right thing in sharing pot revenue
Pueblo County received plaudits for sharing local marijuana tax revenues with the city of Pueblo (85 percent city, 15 percent county) and Pueblo West Metropolitan District (50-50) from state legislators considering a bill that would nullify a court ruling prohibiting Colorado counties from levying recreational pot taxes.
County Commissioner Sal Pace said Pueblo’s revenue sharing had a receptive audience at the state Capitol during discussion of House Bill 1203, which would clarify that the counties and statutory cities are authorized to levy a special marijuana retail sales tax. The bill was spurred by a Colorado Court of Appeals ruling that Adams County’s tax on recreational pot is unconstitutional and not authorized by state statute.
Adams County’s tax was challenged by the cities of Northglenn, Aurora and Commerce in the case, which now is on appeal to the Colorado Supreme Court.
