DENVER — Colorado’s Senate has tentatively approved a measure requiring waiting periods for women seeking abortions.

The bill by GOP Sens. Vicki Marble and Kevin Lundberg would require doctors to offer women the chance to see ultrasound images, to explain abortion risks, and to review alternatives such as adoptions.

A woman can decline that information under the bill. But a doctor not offering it at least 24 hours before an abortion is performed could face penalties.

Another vote by the Republican-led Senate sends the bill to the Democrat-led House, where its chances are minimal.

Lundberg emphasized Wednesday that women can opt out.

Democratic Sen. Rhonda Fields had this to say:

“No. No. If you look at what this bill creates. … I’m going to just limit my remarks to just ‘no.’”
