The Loveland Reporter-Herald editorial: Party politics defeats policy in U.S. Senate

The problem with many feuds is that over time, the cause of their existence is forgotten.

For the Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. Senate, the feud over the use of the filibuster in connection with appointments of the judiciary goes back further than almost any of the members serving there. Opinions as to “who started it” have multiplied as the years have marched on.

Yes, the two political parties have distinct views on public policy, including the size and scope of government itself – and those distinct views help to create the tension in government that foster compromise and better laws.
