Loveland Reporter-Herald editorial: Fight still going against state’s drunken drivers
If the Colorado State Patrol has to start its St. Patrick’s Day extra enforcement of driving under the influence of alcohol offenses a week before the holiday, it might mean we’ve got a problem.
That’s exactly what officials at the State Patrol and the Colorado Department of Transportation did, however. Starting March 10, the State Patrol in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies started their annual crackdown to catch St. Patrick’s Day party revelers who have had too much to drink before getting behind the steering wheel.
Actually, the officials behind the week-early crackdown had some optimism about the increased efforts to prevent drunken driving. Last year, through the St. Patrick’s Day weekend crackdown, various law enforcement arrested 455 drivers – a 10 percent decrease from the year before.
If 455 drunken drivers on the roadway is an improvement, however, then it means we do have a problem.
