Hickenlooper praises Perez as DNC chair, shrugs off notion of ‘party of no’

Gov. John Hickenlooper on Sunday morning was shown national love as a politician who has won in down Democratic years and as a potential 2020 presidential candidate.

Hickenlooper spoke during an appearance on “Meet the Press with Chuck Todd,” where he was asked about the direction of the Democratic Party.

Sadness for Democrats stemming from Hillary Clinton’s loss has been replaced by outrage over President Trump’s administration.

The comments come as former Obama administration Labor Secretary Tom Perez was elected chair of the Democratic National Committee.

“You look at someone like Tom Perez, he’s lived through bias and prejudice, he’s experienced it firsthand, he spent years fighting for social justice and civil rights, and he also as secretary of labor did more to think about how do we re-educate people for the next generation of jobs than just about anybody,” Hickenlooper said.

The move to elect Perez frustrated many on the far left of the party, which has been fueled by a “revolution” flamed by former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. The Sanders camp of the Democratic Party had wanted U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota.

In choosing Perez, many on the progressive side of the party feel that the hobbled DNC is maintaining status quo. That status quo fueled infighting and led to the resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The feeling is that the DNC’s leadership has favored establishment Democrats.

Perez used his first motion as chairman to appoint Ellison as deputy chair. Ellison has called for unity in the wake of the divisive inter-party election.

When asked whether the Democratic Party is uniting around the concept of being the “party of no,” Hickenlooper shrugged off the assertion.

“There’s a lot of anxiety and anger and protest going on …” Hickenlooper acknowledged. “You can’t blame anybody for being that upset. There’s been a lot of problems in the first month of this administration.”

Vacation not probation with pot clubs, says Senate GOP

Call this what it is, bias. I’m surprised it’s Senate Republicans driving a bill for pot clubs. Sens. Vicki Marble of Fort Collins and Tim Neville of Littleton says it’s commonsense and good business, not reefer madness. Neville and Marble are as soft on crime as a hanging judge. Senate Bill 63, however, would create […]
