Silencing Elizabeth Warren prompts Colorado Senate Democrats to speak up
U.S. Senate Republicans Wednesday shut down Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s attempt to read a 31-year-old letter from Corette Scott King about Sen. Jeff Sessions when he sought a federal judgeship in Alabama 1986.
She tried to make Scott’s words part of Senate debate on Sessions’ nomination as attorney general. Sessions was confirmed, 52-47.
Democratic state senators in Colorado took turns reading portions of the letter from the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the Senate Democrats’ YouTube channel.
The video stars Sens. Angela Williams of Denver, John Kefalas of Fort Collins, Lucia Guzman of Denver, Dominick Moreno of Commerce City, Andy Kerr of Lakewood, Steve Fenberg of Boulder and Rhonda Fields of Aurora.
The video ends with the hashtag chyron #ShePersisted.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky invoked a procedural rule that forbids impugning another senator.
“She was warned,” McConnell told reporters. “She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”
The Massachusetts senator is widely viewed as the top Democratic presidential candidate for 2020.
