Editorial: Deeds over dark words
By now you’ve most certainly gotten the full range of reactions to President Trump’s inaugural address.
Our own view is that it hardly mattered what Trump said. Whether he had gone with soaring rhetoric to heal a divided nation or did what he did – which was to unpack his dark vision of America today and his policy promises to fix things – there’s simply no correlation between words and action when it comes to Trump.
Whether he can, in fact, stir a “new national pride” is more important than the word play he employed to chart his vision. He will be judged by what he accomplishes – not what he says. It’s part of the deal voters accepted when they made him president. Given the chance to disqualify him based on a history of false statements and contradictions, voters instead opted to see whether his unconventional campaign could produce results.
We’re as eager as anyone to find out.
