Editorial: Governance not helped by secrecy

The question is, would the public have ever been told if not for an unscripted question from a Loveland City Councilor.

Last Tuesday, during the “new business” portion of the Loveland City Council meeting, councilor John Fogle inquired about an email the interim city attorney had sent to councilors – in a secret message under the guise of “legal advice” – apparently telling them that a civil lawsuit filed by a former Loveland resident against a Loveland Police Department detective was close to settlement.

What’s interesting is that there is no possible way the message could have been legal advice, because the city had ceased to be a party to the lawsuit between resident Jeremy Myers and Detective Brian Koopman many months earlier.
