The Clintons take their Initiative to Denver
The Clintons — former President Bill, former Secretary of State and U.S. Sen. Hillary and former First Daughter Chelsea — took Denver by storm this week as the Clinton Global Initiative America settled into town for three days of meetings.
The confab — a production of the Clinton Foundation, dedicated to “strengthen[ing] the capacity of people throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence” — took over the downtown Denver Sheraton and included sessions focused on the country’s economic recovery. Next year’s CGI meeting will also be held in Denver.
Bill and Chelsea spent Sunday volunteering for local charities, including Habitat for Humanity and Project Cure, as part of a national day of service sponsored by the foundation. On Monday, the former president toured the Stout Street Health Center and adjacent lofts — a Colorado Coalition for the Homeless development funded in part by a tax incentive established during the last year of the Clinton presidency — while the potential future president signed her book Hard Choices at the Tattered Cover bookstore near City Park.
The Tuesday morning session discussed economic justice under the heading “Mobility, Opportunity, and America’s Growth,” and was moderated by Meet the Press host David Gregory. Participants included both Bill and Hillary Clinton, Gov. John Hickenlooper, Ford Foundation President Darren Walker, Chipotle Co-CEO Monty Moran, and former Hewlett Packard executive Carly Fiorina.
Conferees sampled some of the best food in Denver at an event on Tuesday evening in at historic Denver Union Station, with offerings from Linger, Root Down, Snooze, TAG and The Kitchen, among other local eateries.
At Wednesday’s closing session Bill Clinton announced that meeting participants had made 100 new “Commitments to Action,” which could lead to 40,000 jobs, $3.6 million in new capital for green initiatives and more than $215 million of new capital for small and mid-sized enterprises.
