Pollinator or pest? DUG workshop will help you tell the difference | NONPROFIT REGISTER

DENVER URBAN GARDENS

Denver

News: Beneficial insects like hummingbirds, butterflies and bees can make a garden thrive, and a July 26 workshop hosted by Denver Urban Gardens will help Denver-area gardeners to tell the difference between them and the “pesky pests” whose presence isn’t welcomed.

Pollinators in the Garden runs from 9-11 a.m. that day at Posner Center for International Development, 1031 33rd St., Suite 100, Denver.

Topics to be covered are:

Spot the Difference: Master the art of distinguishing helpful pollinators from pesky pests;

Design for Diversity: Map out habitat ideas and plant pairings that keep winged visitors coming back; and

Hands-on Strategies: Take home practical tips, simple actions you can start the same day to boost pollinator health.

A press release issued by Denver Urban Gardens states that pollinators support the flowering of many plants, including plenty of food-producing plants. Pollinators support food security, not just locally but worldwide.

Additionally, pollinators are also helpful for increasing garden yield and reducing dependence on inorganic pest management practices.

The workshop is a pay-as-you-can event, with a suggested fee of $40 with a minimum donation of $5.

“Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just planting your first flower, you’ll leave ready to cultivate a buzzing, blooming sanctuary,” according to the press release.

About the organization: For 40 years, the nonprofit Denver Urban Gardens has worked to create a sustainable urban future where people are deeply connected to earth, each other and food. It recently lost over two-thirds of its $1.2 million in federal funding, resulting in a slowdown of projects and budget reevaluations.
