Trump dodges on appointing Epstein special counsel: ‘I have nothing to do with that’

President Donald Trump dodged a question Wednesday about fallout from his administration‘s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case in recent weeks.

Trump has staunchly defended Attorney General Pam Bondi in the face of growing anger from ostensible Make America Great Again loyalists. Yet a number of top Trump allies on Capitol Hill are pressuring the administration to take further action on the investigation into Epstein’s crimes and a supposed government cover-up.

But Trump avoided directly answering a question about appointing a special counsel to review the entire case, as Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) suggested on Tuesday.

“I have nothing to do with that,” the president told reporters before quickly departing a bill signing ceremony at the White House..

Earlier in the day, Trump criticized “stupid” Republicans pressing for greater transparency on the Epstein case.

“It is a hoax started by Democrats, and it’s been run by the Democrats for four years,” he said. “It’s all been a big hoax. It’s perpetrated by Democrats. Some stupid Republicans and foolish Republicans fall into the net, and so they try and do the Democrats’ work.”

On Truth Social, Trump accused Republican critics of falling for the Epstein “SCAM.”

MAGA ANGER OVER EPSTEIN LIMITS TRUMP’S OPTIONS TO BRIDGE THE GAP

“My PAST supporters have bought into this ‘bulls***,’ hook, line, and sinker. They haven’t learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years,” he wrote in a lengthy post. “Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don’t even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don’t want their support anymore!”

Still, a bipartisan group of lawmakers, including Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA), Thomas Massie (R-KY), and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) are pushing a discharge petition to bypass House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and force a vote on a motion to compel the Justice Department to hand over additional Epstein files.
