Monument police sergeant arrested on child abuse, domestic violence charges

On June 18, Monument Police Sgt. Jose Barraza was arrested on two misdemeanor charges of child abuse and domestic violence.

Court documents show that Barraza faces allegations of misdemeanor child abuse for reckless bodily injury and misdemeanor domestic violence assault in the third degree.

Barraza  has a court appearance for the misdemeanor charges on Friday in Elbert County, where he resides. 

Barraza has been a part of the Monument Police Department for over three years, according to previous reporting by The Gazette.

According to his biography, at the time of joining the Monument force, Barraza has more than 20 years of law enforcement experience. He served in the U.S. Army from 1997 to 2004 and retired as a sergeant. He has served with the Fountain Police Department and has been a civilian police officer for Fort Carson.
