Libertarians wait for Trump to free Ross Ulbricht and fulfill Day One pledge

The Libertarian Party is urging President Donald Trump to follow through immediately on his campaign promise to commute the life sentence of “Silk Road” website creator Ross Ulbricht on the first day of his presidency.

Trump signed a flurry of executive orders during his first day as the 47th president of the United States. His first actions as president included pardoning approximately 1,500 Jan. 6 Capitol rioters and commuting the sentences of six others. However, he did not commute Ulbricht’s sentence, a chief promise he made to libertarians during his appearance at the Libertarian National Convention in May 2024 to earn their votes.

“If you vote for me, on Day One, I will commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht,” Trump said as the crowd erupted in cheers and chants of “Free Ross.” “He’s already served 11 years. We’re going to get him home.”

Ulbricht thanked Trump for his pledge in a statement posted online shortly after, saying, “After 11 years in prison, it is hard to express how I feel at this moment. It is thanks to your undying support that I may get a second chance.”

However, while Trump has yet to commute Ulbricht’s sentence, Libertarian National Committee Chairwoman Angela McArdle told the Washington Examiner in a statement that the party has “full confidence” the president will fulfill his promise.

“It’s been less than 24 hours. We have full confidence that the president will fulfill his promise and that Ross Ulbricht’s persecution will end today,” McArdle said on Tuesday morning.

The 24-hour mark for Trump to fulfill his campaign promise came and went, however, with no announcement that Ulbricht’s sentence had been commuted. The chairwoman posted on X on Monday night that Trump’s team had told her that the order to commute Ulbricht’s sentence would be issued late Monday night or Tuesday morning.

However, 2024 libertarian presidential candidate Chase Oliver said in a statement to the Washington Examiner that he “sincerely” hopes Trump “frees Ross from prison” and that his failure to do so on Day One should have “everyone questioning every promise he made.”

“I sincerely hope that President Trump frees Ross from prison. He had the chance 4 years ago and wavered. He promised this time to do it on Day One and failed to deliver,” Oliver said. “It should have everyone questioning every promise he made on the campaign trail.”

Still, McArdle’s confidence in Ulbricht’s freedom is bolstered by top Trump ally Elon Musk’s assurances that Ulbricht will be released.

“Ross will be freed too,” Musk posted on X on Monday at 9 p.m.

Ulbricht’s release from prison has been a top priority for libertarians, who made his imprisonment a focal point of their 2024 convention, with attendees holding “Free Ross” signs throughout the weekend.

Ulbricht, who was arrested for his operation of the online drug-selling site, was sentenced to life in prison in 2015.
