Welcome to Briefly, Colorado Politics’ daily news briefing. Here’s what’s going on today:
Polis congratulates Trump on election victory
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis congratulated former President Donald Trump for winning the presidential race against Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump,” Polis said in a statement. “Colorado remains strongly committed to protecting freedom, choice, and the opportunity for everyone to build the life they want in our great state. That is true no matter who is serving in the White House and I will work with the President-elect however I can to save people money, create more good-paying jobs, increase access to housing Coloradans can afford, protect our water and air quality, and improve our roads and bridges.”
The Colorado governor added: “I hope President-elect Trump and Vice-President-Elect Vance take this opportunity to try to unite our country and set aside the campaign’s divisive rhetoric. No matter what, the Free State of Colorado will remain a beacon that reflects the values of economic liberty and personal liberty that this country was built on, and we will do everything in our power to protect all Coloradans and our freedoms.”
Polis also issued a message of thanks to Harris, who he said ran a “strong, historic and issues-based campaign”.
Trump visited the Centennial State last month for a rally in Aurora, where he criticized Polis’ approach to immigration, calling him a “coward” and a “fraud”.
Polis orders flags fly at half-staff to honor Golden officer killed in line of duty
Gov. Polis ordered that flags be flown at half-staff the day of the funeral for Golden Police Officer Evan Dunn, who was struck by a suspected impaired driver while responding to a crash on Colorado 58 on Thursday. The date of the service has not yet been set.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Officer Dunn, and my thoughts go out to his family and friends on the Golden Police Department,” Polis said. “We also hope for a speedy recovery for the officer who was injured in this incident. Our law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect Coloradans day in and day out, and that’s exactly what Officer Dunn and his partner, Officer Bethany Grusing, were doing. We are grateful for their service and commitment to keeping Coloradans safe.”
Dunn also served in the Colorado National Guard.
