Authorities investigat suspeicious package addressed to Colorado Secretary of State
Authorities are investigating a suspicious package addressed to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office.
The package was sent with a return address to the “U.S. Traitor Elimination Army” and contained a white powdery substance, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. Similar packages have been received by state election offices around the country this week.
The package is being investigated by the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and Colorado State Patrol. Preliminary investigations indicate that the white powder is harmless.
“We cannot tolerate threats to election officials and public servants,” said Secretary of State Jena Griswold. “These threatening mailings are unacceptable and we must condemn these actions in the strongest possible terms.”
“As Clerk and Chief Elections Official for Denver, I take any threats on our democracy and offices very seriously,” added Denver Clerk and Recorder Paul Lopez. “As elections professionals, we regularly train and implement measures to ensure voting in this election remains safe and secure. Ballots will be sent in the mail starting Oct. 11. All you have to do is fill out your ballot, sign and return it via mail or a 24-hour secure ballot drop box. We’ve come a long was as a country for the freedom to vote and we will NOT be intimidated.”
