Adam Frisch calls on Biden to withdraw from presidential race, while Yadira Caraveo says it’s up to voters; El Paso GOP censures Vickie Tonkins, calls for Dave Williams’ removal | WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Today is July 3, 2024, and here’s what you need to know:

Colorado Democrat Adam Frisch calls on Biden to withdraw as party's presidential nominee

Democratic congressional candidate Adam Frisch on Tuesday called on President Joe Biden to step down as his party’s presidential nominee, saying that Biden’s performance in last week’s debate made clear that the country needs a “new generation of leadership.”

Frisch, the Democratic nominee in Colorado’s Republican-leaning 3rd Congressional District, told Colorado Politics that neither Biden nor former President Donald Trump should be their party’s White House nominees.

“It has been clear to me for some time — and the debate only reinforced it — neither candidate should be running for president,” Frisch said. “We need a president that can unite America to realize our nation’s unlimited potential.”

El Paso County GOP censures Vickie Tonkins, calls for Dave Williams' removal in disputed meeting

The standoff between Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams and some of the Republicans seeking his removal from office took an unexpected turn on Monday night when members of the El Paso County GOP’s governing body convened on lawn chairs in a church parking lot in Colorado Springs to demand that Williams resign.

In addition to approving a resolution calling for Williams to step down or face removal, the county party’s executive committee voted to censure county Republican chair Vickie Tonkins and demand that she resign. Tonkins, however, immediately denounced the gathering as a “fake meeting” and declared its proceedings invalid.

“A fake meeting of disgruntled agitators who met in a parking lot does not mean actual business occurred and it’s not worthy of your reporting,” Tonkins told Colorado Politics in an email late Monday. “The El Paso County Republicans support Dave Williams and will continue to do so.”

Democrat Yadira Caraveo says it's 'up to the voters' whether Biden is capable of serving four more years

The Democratic lawmaker seeking reelection in Colorado’s most closely divided congressional district on Tuesday said it’s up to the voters to decide whether President Joe Biden can win in November and serve four more years in the White House.

U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo told Colorado Politics in an exclusive interview that it was clear Biden “did not do well” in last week’s debate with former President Donald Trump. However, she said she’s focused on representing her constituents, not on the presidential race.

“Obviously, he did not do well on the night of the debate. I think we all saw that and denying that would be silly,” Caraveo said, referring to Biden’s weak performance, which led to what some of the president’s supporters have described as a panic among Democrats over whether the 81-year-old is the strongest candidate to take on Trump.

Colorado Democrats reject resolution on Gaza cease-fire

Colorado Democrats on Monday rejected a resolution calling for a cease-fire in Gaza and condemning the “disproportionate military response by Israel” to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that killed 1,200 people — all familiar talking points raised in other avenues by activists seeking an immediate end to hostilities.

In addition, the resolution condemned Hamas for the attack that sparked the war and said the group, labeled as a terrorist organization by the U.S., must be dismantled. The resolution did not identify the mechanisms to achieve those two ends.

The state party’s central committee met virtually on Monday and voted against the proposal. Colorado Public Radio reported that it garnered only 40% support, while 55% voted against it. The rest of the central committee abstained.

New York Judge Juan Merchan on Tuesday delayed the criminal sentencing of former President Donald Trump until Sept. 18 after he was scheduled to be sentenced on July 11.

Merchan’s decision comes just hours after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said he would not object to a two-week delay of the sentencing in light of Trump’s bid to cite the Supreme Court‘s recent presidential immunity in a new motion to toss out his conviction. The judge said the new date in September will be used “for the imposition of sentence, if such is still necessary.”

The decision means that Trump won’t be sentenced before the Republican National Convention, where he is slated to become the GOP nominee to take on President Joe Biden in November. Instead, it will take place at the peak of the general election race, shortly after the next presidential debate on September 10.
