Comedian Jeff Foxworthy once said: “you might be a redneck if your belt buckle is bigger than your head.”

It hasn’t stopped two big city mayors from comparing the size of their…belt buckles.

Ahead of Monday’s NHL Western Conference playoff series between the Dallas Stars and the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston have placed a friendly bet on the outcome of the series.

Should the Stars come out on top, Mayor Johnston will present a Denver flag belt buckle to Mayor Johnson. Conversely, if the Avalanche win, Mayor Johnson will give a Texas-style belt buckle to Mayor Johnston.

“What do you say, @MikeJohnstonCO, to a friendly wager on the @NHL @StanleyCup Playoffs Western Conference second-round? If the @Avalanche win, a Texas-style belt buckle is yours, on me. State YOUR wager and let’s go all in!” Johnson posted on social media platform X Monday morning.

Shortly after, Mayor Johnston responded, calling Johnson on his bet.

“Game on! WHEN the @Avalanche beat the @DallasStars, you send me a Texas belt to add to my collection. If there are any surprises, you get one of my own Denver belt buckles. Deal?” Johnston posted in response.

As D Magazine, a monthly magazine covering the Dallas–Fort Worth points out, Dallas’ mayor doesn’t have a great record with sports bets. In 2023, when Errol Spence Jr. fought Terence Crawford, the mayor wagered a belt buckle against some Omaha Steaks with Mayor Jean Stothert. Spence lost the fight.

As confirmed by officials within his administration, the bet is the first mayoral friendly wager for Johnston.

Denver’s previous mayor, Michael Hancock made friendly wagers with the mayor of Tampa for the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs and the mayor of Miami for the 2023 NBA Finals.

“It’s a friendly bet between two mayors with amazing hockey teams,” a statement from Johnston’s office read to the Denver Gazette. “We’re hoping for another Avs series win.”

So far, Denver’s mayor is the frontrunner in this bet. The Avalanche won Game 1 of the series against the Stars, winning 4-3 in a comeback overtime win on Monday night after Dallas jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series will take place Thursday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. Mountain Time and the game will be nationally broadcasted on TNT.
