Republican Nikki Haley unveils Colorado leadership team ahead of campaign rally in Centennial

Republican Nikki Haley announced the roster of her Colorado campaign team on Monday, the day before the former U.N. ambassador and South Carolina governor was set to rally supporters ahead of the state’s March 5 presidential primary.

Among her eight state campaign co-chairs are two former U.S. attorneys, a former Colorado Senate president and a county commissioner.

Haley is the lone remaining prominent Republican challenging former President Donald Trump for the GOP nomination. After losing the primary in her home state on Saturday, she vowed to stay in the race at least through Super Tuesday, when Colorado and 15 other states vote, despite polls showing Trump with double digit leads nationally and in upcoming primaries.

“I feel no need to kiss the ring,” Haley said while campaigning in South Carolina before suffering a 20-point drubbing from Trump, who has won all four of the early state contests and appeared poised to carry Michigan’s primary on Tuesday.

After campaigning in Michigan over the weekend, Haley was scheduled to hold a rally Tuesday afternoon in Centennial, part of a cross-country tour of Super Tuesday states that also includes stops in Minnesota, Utah and Virginia.

The co-chairs of Haley’s Colorado leadership team include former U.S. Attorneys Troy Eid and Jason Dunn; Tom Norton, a former Colorado Senate President and former mayor of Greeley; former diplomat Todd Chapman; Prowers County Commissioner Wendy Buxton-Andrade; Wil Armstrong, a former congressional candidate and chair of the Colorado Christian University Board of Trustees; and Greg Lorden and Kimberley Lorden, co-founders of the Centennial-based Ambleside School of Colorado.

Calling her “the Winston Churchill of our time,” Eid said Haley has what it takes to lead the country in perilous times.

“She is the only candidate in either party with the courage and consistency to stand up for America in a world that is getting more dangerous by the day,” Eid said in a statement released by Haley’s campaign.

Chapman, a former U.S. ambassador to Ecuador and Brazil, said Haley “best demonstrates the moral character, conservative principles, and successful leadership with which to lead our nation during this challenging and dangerous time.”

He added: “Haley has a proven record of bringing diverse groups together to reach positive and pragmatic outcomes. She did this in South Carolina, at the United Nations with our allies, and she will do this for America.”

Trump’s campaign last month named former state Rep. Justin Everett, R-Littleton, as its state director. While the campaign has yet to name a state leadership team, the former president has been endorsed by the Colorado Republican Party and U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert.

Ballots for Colorado’s presidential primary are due to county clerks by 7 p.m. March 5.
