WORLD DENVER

Denver

News: Maryam Monsef, founder and chief executive officer of ONWARD and Canada’s first Minister for Women and Gender Equality, will be the keynote speaker for WorldDenver’s International Women’s Day Luncheon.

With some 900 guests, the March 8 event is one of the largest events of its kind in the nation. It is being chaired by Maria Gonzales, vice president/development for Protect Our Winters, and Jenna McMullin, vice president/communications for Lockheed Martin Space.

Lockheed Martin is the day’s presenting sponsor. Raymond James Investment Management is the keynote speaker sponsor.

In addition to Monsef’s talk, the luncheon also is the occasion for WorldDenver to honor the Women’s Bean Project for its longstanding efforts to inspire women through social enterprise, and Dr. Margaret “Migs” Muldrow, founder and board chair of Village Health Partnership, which works to make motherhood safer in rural Ethiopia.

Monsef was 11 years old when she arrived in Canada as a refugee from her native Afghan. “Against all odds, she escaped war and survived poverty and displacement to become the first Afghan Canadian to serve in Canada’s parliament,” according to a press release promoting the $120-per-ticket event. She served in Parliament from 2015 to 2021.

She also established Canada’s first full department for women and gender equality where, under her stewardship, Canada was recognized as a world leader in sexual and reproductive health and rights, investments in domestic and international grassroots women’s organizations and for its intersectional response to COVID-19.

In 2018 and 2019, she was recognized by Apolitical as one of the Top 20 global influencers on gender equality, along with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Michelle Obama, and Malala.

Tickets are now on sale and may be purchased by calling Lauren Osga at 720-330-9287 or emailing her at lauren@worlddenver.org.

About the organization: WorldDenver’s mission is to strengthen and expand the community of engaged global citizens and organizations in Colorado through education, cross-cultural exchange, and personal interaction with international leaders, professionals, and students.
