Broomfield Mayor Patrick Quinn resigns six months before end of term

Broomfield Mayor Patrick Quinn is stepping down from his position, submitting his resignation Monday. Quinn’s last day will be Sunday — six months before his term was set to expire.

Quinn, 67, was elected as mayor in 2019. Before that, he served three other terms as mayor from 2007 to 2013.

“As all of you know, I love Broomfield and will continue to be its greatest cheerleader,” Quinn said in his resignation letter. “This is a unique place, a place where we chose to raise our daughters and the place where we will retire.”

Quinn said he is ending his term early because he and his wife, Carleen, decided it would be the best choice for their family. Quinn and his wife have five daughters, the youngest two of whom still live at home.

This resignation comes after Quinn announced in December that he would not be seeking re-election in November.

During his first stint as mayor, Quinn expanded bus rapid transit options, helped finance and complete the U.S. Highway 36 managed lanes project and reduced the city’s debt after the Great Recession.

Though most of Quinn’s second mayoral appointment was spent responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, he continued to focus on transportation, advocating for Broomfield to receive adequate funding from the state and Regional Transportation District.

“Without hesitation, I am proud of how the City and County of Broomfield has responded to the multitude of challenges thrown our way, not the least of which was COVID-19,” Quinn said.

Quinn, a Democrat, said he ran for mayor again in 2019 to help unite the city by working collaboratively with Democrats, independents and Republicans.

Outside of being mayor, Quinn served Broomfield for nearly 40 years, working on the Open Space and Trails Committee, Open Space Foundation and four different City Councils.

He also owned a business in the city as a certified public accountant and served on Gov. John Hickenlooper’s Oil and Gas Task Force.

With Quinn’s resignation, Broomfield’s Mayor Pro Tem Guyleen Castriotta will fulfill mayoral duties until a new mayor is appointed.

The City Council has 30 days after Quinn’s departure to appoint a new mayor. The selected individual will finish Quinn’s term, ending on Nov. 9.

Anyone interested in the position should visit the Broomfield website for application instructions.
