Denver Housing Authority’s leader exiting for national nonprofit

The leader of Denver Housing Authority is stepping down to lead a national nonprofit.

Ismael Guerrero, who has been the executive director of the Denver Housing Authority for more than 12 years, will become on July 1 the president and CEO of Mercy Housing, a Denver-based affordable housing nonprofit.

“My career has been dedicated to creating housing solutions, empowering residents and building healthy communities,” Guerrero said in a Monday release. “I feel incredibly blessed to have this opportunity to lead Mercy Housing and to do so with a team that has consistently demonstrated a deep passion for and commitment to bringing hope and opportunity to individuals and families across the country.”

Prior to his role as head of the Denver Housing Authority, Guerrero worked as a business development officer with US Bancorp Community Development Corporation, where he helped develop affordable multifamily housing throughout the Western United States.

He was selected from a national search based on his “extensive track record” and “unwavering commitment” to empowering the communities he serves through housing and neighborhood development.

“Ismael Guerrero truly embodies Mercy Housing’s core values of respect, justice and mercy,” Sister Linda Werthmann, the chair of the Mercy Housing board of trustees, said in a statement. “We cannot think of a better individual to lead us forward under our new strategic plan, and we have every confidence that he will have a substantial and lasting impact on both the organization and the affordable housing industry as a whole.”

Guerrero said he would work with the authority’s senior leadership team and board of commissioners “to plan for a transition which will set DHA on a course for continued success,” according to a statement issued from DHA. “I have every confidence our legacy of positive impact and accomplishments in Denver will only grow stronger.”

Guerrero will replace Jane Grad, who is retiring from Mercy Housing after 33 years.
