Details set for HD38 vacancy committee
A Republican vacancy committee will convene in Littleton on Saturday to appoint a new representative for House District 38.
The committee, consisting of approximately 90 electors, will start at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 at Buck Recreation Center, 2004 W. Powers Ave. Check-in will be at 3.
Marty Bolt, the chair of the House District 38 Republicans, said that the committee will take nominations from the floor, but there are two candidates who have already declared for the seat.
Richard Champion is the mayor for the town of Columbine Valley. Brenda Stokes is a former candidate for the Littleton City Council.
The vacancy occurred when Rep. Susan Beckman abruptly resigned on Jan. 17. The Denver Post reports that she has since become a regional director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The new district representative will take his or her seat more than one month into the 120-day legislative session.
Colorado Politics recently found that since the 2018 election, Colorado now has the highest rate of unelected legislators in the country. After the HD38 representative is seated, 12% of General Assembly members will be serving districts to which they were not elected.
