Citing an “urgent focus on ending late-term abortion in Colorado,” this Saturday’s Celebrate Life rally in downtown Denver will remind Coloradans opposed to abortion rights to back a pending ballot measure to accomplish that goal.

“We must not let up in our efforts to ensure that the goodness of every human life is respected in our laws, our churches and our families,” said Denver Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila. He will be one of the speakers at the event.

Catholic Charities has organized the event, which will begin at the Capitol at 1 p.m. and proceed with a march around Civic Center Park. Preceding the rally, some area churches will hold a special mass in English and Spanish.

In November, a ban on abortions 22 weeks after the “gestational age” of the fetus may be on the statewide ballot, only exempting cases in which a woman’s life is in danger. Colorado’s three Catholic bishops support the initiative, number 120, and the Catholic News Agency reports that every parish in the state is allowed to have signature gathering in their church.

Organizers need to turn in at least 124,632 valid signatures.

Aquila has said Colorado has “some of the least restrictive abortion laws in the country,” and urged all Catholics to advocate for Initiative 120.

The Guttmacher Institute, which is a proponent of reproductive rights, notes that Colorado does not have some of the limits on abortion that are common to other states, including allowing private providers of abortion-related services to opt out of care, and requiring parental consent for minors seeking abortions. Utah, Nebraska, Kansas and Wyoming all have those restrictions.
