The Pueblo Chieftain: Vote ‘yes’ on issue 6B
When is a tax increase not really a tax increase? Well, due to a quirk in state law, issue 6B on the November ballot provides an answer to that question.
The ballot language begins with a deceptive opening clause: “Shall Pueblo City-County Library District taxes be increased $1,143,328 in 2020 ….” Which sounds really bad, right? We don’t need more taxes.
But in reality, Pueblo County taxpayers wouldn’t be paying any more than they have for the last two decades. The property tax rate that was put into place 20 years ago to support the library district is expiring this year. This ballot measure simply would continue that rate into the future.
