The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel: Opinion 101
When groups of young students come in to tour the Sentinel, the editorial page editor will often ask them if they know what “opinion” is. They rarely volunteer an answer. So they get a quick lesson.
“My shirt is blue. My shirt is ugly. Which statement is an opinion?” They get it. One statement is an objective fact that we can all agree on. The other is subjective and dependent on personal preference.
That distinction helps explain what we do on the editorial page. Of course, most adults – especially Sentinel subscribers – understand how opinion, commentary and analysis differ from objective fact-based news reporting.
