The Pueblo Chieftain: A brighter-looking future
It wasn’t the final, final announcement that many people in Pueblo have been awaiting anxiously. However, EVRAZ North America’s plans to expand its local steel mill took another major step forward with last Friday’s announcement about a power source for the proposed project.
Officials from EVRAZ, Xcel Energy and Lightsource BP came together, along with Gov. Jared Polis, to provide details about a new 240-megawatt solar facility that will be built on the steel company’s property.
The solar plant is expected to produce power for EVRAZ’s operations, with a fixed-cost agreement, through 2041. Skip Herald, EVRAZ North America’s president and chief executive officer, said the agreement is critical to the company’s plans to invest $480 million to make the local mill capable of producing longer railroad rails.
