The Pueblo Chieftain: A milestone for homeless

It hasn’t been easy, but Pueblo finally has a location for a permanent homeless shelter. The Pueblo Rescue Mission has secured $1.3 million to renovate a building on West Fourth Street that previously housed a shelter.

Depending on when that funding becomes available, the old/new shelter could open its doors as early as this fall. When the renovation work is done, the shelter will be capable of housing up to 120 people.

In addition to providing a place for the homeless to sleep, the mission plans to offer programming for those who want jobs and housing. City officials should be applauded for their apparent decision to take a “hands off” approach to operating the shelter, allowing an agency with experience in that area to take the lead.
