Denver mayor’s race: Hancock fundraising tops $1M, leads pack

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock has topped $1 million in fundraising in his bid for a third term this spring, four times as much as any other candidate.

Hancock raised $1,019,025 as of Dec. 31, according to the latest batch of campaign finance reports, released this week by the Denver Elections Division. The reports disclose funds raised from Oct. 1 through the end of 2018.

Four years ago, Hancock, running for his second term as Denver’s mayor, had nearly $1 million in his campaign coffers at this point but had not surpassed the mark.

No. 2 in fundraising so far is Jamie Giellis, former president of Denver’s River North Art District, who reported a total fundraising haul of $260,276 since launching her campaign in November.

Giellis’  fundraising total includes $50,000 she contributed to her campaign on Dec. 30, according to her report.

While Giellis has raised only a fraction of Hancock’s campaign war chest, the gap between their last quarter fundraising totals is less than $50,000, with Hancock leading.

Third in the race for funding: former state legislator Penfield Tate III, who entered the race in October and raised just over $82,000 last quarter.

Tate is a partner at law firm Kutak Rock LLP in Denver. His father, Penfield Tate II, was Boulder’s first African American council member and still the city’s only black mayor.

Lisa Calderón, who also entered the race in October, had raised nearly $26,000 as of this week’s reports. Calderón is a criminal justice professor at Denver’s Regis University and co-chair of the Colorado Latino Forum.

Of candidates whose latest reports were available on the division’s website as of noon Jan. 16, the remainders’ fundraising totals were well behind those of the leaders. Next in line after Calderón: Kalyn Rose Heffernan, with $675, and Leatha Scott, with $168.

Hancock was officially launching his campaign Wednesday night with a rally at the Hiawatha Davis Jr. Recreation Center, where he spent time during his childhood.

Contributors to his campaign during the latest quarter include Dick Monfort, owner/chairman and CEO of the Colorado Rockies baseball team, who contributed the personal maximum of $3,000, as well as Denver Broncos general manager John Elway, who contributed a total of $1,010.

Other notable Denver mayoral race contributors include former Lt. Gov. Donna Lynne, who gave $500 to Tate on Dec. 31.
