The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel: Protecting schools

When students return to District 51 schools today after the lengthy holiday break, there will be a total of 11 school resource officers and eight security officers making their presence known in the hallways.

It’s part of a local trend of beefing up security in the schools. At the start of 2018, eight school resource officers were assigned to District 51 high schools and middle schools. In the future, local municipalities, law enforcement and the school district want to boost today’s numbers even further. If things go according to plan, there eventually will be 14 police officers in the school and one additional D51 security officer, for a total of nine.

Horrific stories of active shooters in schools – like the one at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., last year – are driving these changes. When these shootings occur, the public outcry is overwhelming – and usually aimed at Congress or state legislatures to make it tougher to acquire guns.

We do have a serious problem with border security, and so it’s unfortunate Democrats and the media have tried to downplay […]
