Polis sets ‘Blue Sneaker Ball’ to celebrate inauguration

Gov.-elect Jared Polis will be sworn in as Colorado’s 43rd chief executive on Jan. 8 at the State Capitol, with a party scheduled for that evening that will include a concert, local fare and the chance to browse exhibits at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

The public is invited to attend the inauguration ceremony at 11 a.m. on the west steps of the Capitol. Tickets aren’t required, and the viewing area is set to open at 9 a.m.

Tickets to the Blue Sneaker Ball – a nod to the incoming governor’s favorite comfortable footwear – are available online for $75, with discounted $35 tickets available for students and military, the Colorado For All inaugural committee announced.

The festivities will feature a concert showcasing homegrown talent along with Colorado food and drink. A cash bar will be available for revelers with proper ID.

“The Blue Sneaker Ball theme continues to build on Jared’s focus of moving Colorado forward into the future and being a governor for everyone,” said Mara Sheldon, a spokesperson for the committee.

In addition to Polis, officials who will be sworn in at the Capitol to four-year terms include Lt. Gov.-elect Dianne Primavera, Secretary of State-elect Jena Griswold, Attorney General-elect Phil Weiser and State Treasurer-elect Dave Young.

Security screening will be in effect for the celebration at the museum, so attendees are encouraged to bring as few personal items as possible and to leave weapons, liquids, signs and umbrellas at home.

Marlon Reis, Polis’s partner and the state’s incoming first gentleman, is the honorary chair of the Colorado For All nonprofit committee organizing the events. Co-chairs of the committee are Robin Hickenlooper, the state’s outgoing first lady; Pitkin County attorney Blanca Uzeta O’Leary; and Rick Sapkin, founder of Edgemark Development.

Leftover proceeds from the party will be distributed to the Governor’s Residence Preservation Fund and Colorado’s Wild Animal Sanctuary near Keenesberg, Sheldon said.
