The Pueblo Chieftain: Vote counting snafu was inexcusable
It’s one of the most basic concepts in American democracy: If you’re an adult citizen, you’re legally entitled to vote in local, state and federal elections. And your vote should count exactly the same, no more and no less, than anyone else who participates in those elections.
Unless you happen to be one of 675 people in Pueblo County who cast “uncured” ballots in last month’s general election. In that case, your vote was worth nothing. Nothing at all.
As the election results were being counted, the Pueblo County Clerk & Recorder’s Office set aside a number of ballots that had problems of one kind or another. Perhaps they didn’t have signatures or the signatures didn’t appear to match the ones in voter registration records. Or maybe there were other problems with the way the ballots were marked.
