Colorado’s powerbrokers were meeting with United States Olympic Committee leaders in Denver Tuesday, trying to keep the possibility of a bid for an upcoming Winter Games alive despite opposition from Gov.-Elect Jared Polis.

Denver and Salt Lake City are the two remaining sites that the USOC has invited to submit bids for a future winter games, possibly as early as 2030. A third area, Reno-Lake Tahoe, on Monday declined an invitation to bid.

9News learned leaders of the Colorado Springs-based USOC were in Denver for a site visit Tuesday, including a late-day meeting with Denver Mayor Michael Hancock. The Democrat is one of two honorary co-chairs of Denver’s exploratory committee, which earlier this year recommended an Olympic bid provided Colorado voters give their approval in an election in 2020 or later.

Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, is the other honorary co-chair. His spokesperson told 9News he attended Tuesday’s meeting.

Polis, also a Democrat, has said he would not support bringing the Olympics to Colorado.
