A bigger fundraising slice for Hancock challenger

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock may have the biggest stockpile of cash on hand for his potential 2019 bid for a third term, but a pizza and cannabis entrepreneur who wants to replace him has bested the incumbent in recent fundraising.

In finance reports filed over the last few days, Kayvan Khalatbari – founder of Sexy Pizza and the Denver Relief cannabis business – said he raised $69,569 in campaign cash across the first three months of 2018 for the mayoral race, while Hancock reports taking in $44,780 over that same period.

Still, Hancock remains well out in front when it comes to total cash on hand as of March 31: $402,298 to Khalatbari’s $38,173.

Through the end of March, Hancock has reported a total of $357,002 raised for a potential third-term bid, versus Khalatbari’s $101,060.

The election is next May.
