Sierra Club poll shows big support for renewable energy from Colorado voters

DENVER – Colorado politicians who are talking about getting all of the state’s energy from renewable sources are saying what most voters want to hear, if you have faith in a poll released Monday by the Sierra Club.
It suggested:
“It’s not surprising that there’s growing broad support in Colorado for clean energy because it’s clear that technologies like wind and solar can free us from pollution, save us money, and create new jobs in a booming industry,” said Jim Alexee, director of the Colorado chapter of the Sierra Club, said in a statement. “Coloradans know that replacing fossil fuels with 100 percent clean energy means we can all breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live in safer, healthier, and more prosperous communities.”
Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research’s interviewers questioned 500 registered Colorado voters in mid-December. The poll’s a margin of error is plus or minus 4.4 percent.
The pollsters are from a big-time Washington, D.C., political research firm that looked at a handful of swing states – Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Colorado.
That’s good news to three Democratic candidates for governor. Jared Polis and Michael Johnston have said they support all-renewable energy. Cary Kennedy supports the 100 percent goal but hasn’t set a timetable to get there.
“As Governor, I will double the Renewable Energy standard, guarantee Colorado homes and businesses a 100% renewable energy option, and make CO the best state in the country to buy and drive an electric vehicle,” Kennedy says on her website.
The Colorado chapter of the Sierra Club boasts that eight communities in state have pledged to reach 100 renewable energy: Boulder,, Breckenridge, Lafayette,Longmont, Nederland and Pueblo. Last month Summit County became the first county in the country to get onboard. Aspen already gets is juice from all renewable sources, one of the first cities in the country to do so. Nationally, 61 communities have officially committed to the goal.
