Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper on Thursday morning ordered American flags on public buildings across the state to be lowered to honor slain Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy Heath Gumm.

They will remain lowered until sunset after his funeral.

A deputy since 2013, Grimm, 32, was killed in the line of duty answering a call in Thornton Wednesday night.

The governor confirmed the bad news in a statement late Wednesday night

“Tonight we watched as a community was on edge and a sheriff’s deputy was shot while responding to a call in Adams County,” the governor said just past 10 p.m. “We are deeply saddened to learn that the deputy has died from injuries sustained in the shooting. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the family and friends of the deputy killed.

“The investigation is ongoing and authorities continue to work to restore calm to the area.”

Gumm and other officers were dispatched to an assault-in-progress call in a neighborhood just east of Interstate 25 in Thornton around 7 p.m.

The deputies talked to a person matching the description of one of the people involved in the disturbance. He took off and ran behind a house, the Sheriff’s Department said. With four deputies chasing him he pulled out a pistol and fired, hitting Gumm in the chest. He was located later and arrested. His name was not released Wednesday night.

Two other suspects were still being sought, and law enforcement said they were considered armed and dangerous.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office tweeted out information at 7:08 p.m. that sent concern and fear across the metro region.

Officers responding to the call arrested one person but two others got away, causing a massive search and high tension in the southern part of the city.

“The entire Sheriff’s Office is praying for the wife and family of our fallen deputy,” the agency said in a statement. “Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers as this is a very difficult time for everyone.”

The last officer’s death in the metro region is still recent. On Dec. 31 Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy Zackari Parrish was shot and killed, and four other officers were wounded after being summoned to an ambush at a Highlands Ranch apartment.
